Access to Medical Records

Under the Data Protection Act 1998 everyone has a right to have a copy of their medical records.
There are some exceptions :-
  • Access may be refused if the information contained on the records is deemed detrimental to the health of the patient or another person

  • Details about third parties may be removed

  • If applying for another person you must have their written consent or power of attorney

  • Medical records have been fully computerised at our surgery since 2000. Notes from treatment received elsewhere such as hospital are kept there but we usually receive a summary report of your treatment which is added to your records.

If you wish to access your records please apply in writing to the Practice Manager. You will usually receive a response within 21 days.

A charge of £10 is made if you require information that is held on the computer. If you also wish to access manual records the charge can be up to £50. Photocopies are charged at 30p per sheet.
