Services
The clinics and services we provide, how to arrange them, and where to find help outside the practice.
What we offer
We provide a comprehensive range of medical services for our patients, including:
- morning opening at 08:00 Monday to Friday
- lunchtime opening
- appointments outside traditional times — evenings and Saturdays, held at Stubley Medical Centre
- a choice of male and female doctors
- a skilled nursing team
- a full range of contraceptive services
- child health clinics
- skin surgery
- travel clinics
- a training practice for medical students and GP registrars.
Two services have pages of their own: travel health and sick and fit notes.
Before booking with us, it is worth knowing that a pharmacist may be able to help — they can now treat some conditions themselves, without you needing to see a GP.
Mental health and talking therapies
One in four of us experience mental health problems at some time in our lives, and depression is one of the commonest reasons for consulting a GP in the UK. While medication has its place, it is no quick fix, and many patients benefit more from talking therapies.
In Derbyshire we are fortunate in being able to access psychological therapies such as counselling, cognitive behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy and group therapy. These services are free and the therapies are approved by NICE. You can be referred by a GP or practice nurse, or you can refer yourself.
The following providers offer psychological therapies in our area:
- Trent PTS — 01332 265 659
- Talking Mental Health Derbyshire — 0300 123 0542
- Everyturn
- Kooth — support for young people in Derbyshire aged 11 to 18; safe, confidential and anonymous.
Care coordinators and social prescribing
Care coordinators provide extra time, capacity and expertise to support patients in preparing for clinical conversations, or in following up discussions with primary care professionals. They work closely with the GPs and other primary care colleagues within the practice.
We also have a social prescribing link worker, offering you support and connecting you to local services to help improve your wellbeing. Many things in life can make us feel unwell, and a medical prescription is not always the answer.
Test results
We will contact you by telephone or by letter only if a result is abnormal and you require treatment or further investigations. You will not be contacted if your result is normal.
To check a result yourself, either view it on an App/online or telephone after 11:00, when the lines are usually less busy. The administrative staff will give results to you, or you may be asked to speak to the nurse or doctor. Adults’ results will not be given to anyone other than the patient, except in exceptional circumstances.
The NHS explains what is involved in the two most common tests: blood tests and X-rays.
Referrals
If you need to see a specialist, your GP can refer you to another NHS service through the NHS e-Referral Service.
This lets you choose your hospital or clinic and book your first appointment at a time that suits you, either online, by phone, or with help from the practice.
Fees, performance and other services
Covid booster vaccinations
The practice provides Covid vaccinations for eligible patients. The current eligibility criteria are:
- residents in a care home for older adults
- all adults aged 75 years and over
- people aged 6 months to 74 years who are immunosuppressed, as laid out in the Immunisation Green Book, Covid-19 chapter.
Appointments may be booked by calling the practice on 01246 412242.
If you are attending for a flu vaccine and are eligible for the Covid booster, you will be offered this at the same time. You may decline the Covid booster, or if you would rather have the vaccines separately you will need to book a Covid vaccine appointment by calling the practice.
Services we charge for
Some services are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include:
- medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV and so on)
- insurance claim forms
- prescriptions for taking medication abroad
- private sick notes
- vaccination certificates.
The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales. Please contact reception to discuss appointment availability.
Fees for non NHS Services (DOCX)
Road Traffic Act charges
Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, the first doctor providing emergency treatment to the victim of a road traffic accident is entitled to charge a fee. A fee may be levied in respect of each person treated (section 158(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1988).
NHS funding does not cover the emergency treatment of road traffic accident victims, and we therefore charge a fee of £25.00 for each patient consulted. This fee is payable regardless of whether or not the patient is registered with the practice.
Patients are advised that this fee is payable at the time of the consultation and that they can reclaim the fee from the driver’s insurance company. This is their legal right, laid down in statute.
Where the purpose of attending the surgery is to record injuries for future medico-legal purposes, this is not covered by the Road Traffic Act and the GPs may charge their own rate for this work. The rate applicable at the surgery is £85, the fee for a private consultation.
How our performance is monitored
As of March 2021 the practice list size was 10,288 patients.
We monitor our performance constantly, but are also subject to continual assessment by a number of outside agencies.
- Our integrated care board monitors our contractual performance, services, referrals and prescribing.
- NHS England monitors our management of chronic diseases through the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF).
- Cancer prevalence and diagnosis figures are published in the national cancer services profile.
- The Care Quality Commission assesses all healthcare providers regularly, and their latest assessment of our practice is published on their website.
Research at the practice
Dronfield Medical Practice is research active. Conducting high quality clinical research helps us to keep improving NHS care by finding out which treatments work best.
In our practice you may be invited to take part in a clinical research study. Taking part is entirely voluntary and can be a very rewarding experience.
- Be Part of Research — find local clinical research studies and read more about research in our area.
- My research story — accounts from other patients who have taken part.
- National Institute for Health and Care Research.
